A Classic “Battle of Perth County” Goes Decisively to Listowel
LISTOWEL, ONTARIO — In front of an energized home crowd at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena, the Listowel Cyclones delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, shutting out the second-place St. Marys Lincolns 4–0 in a textbook display of structure, discipline, and timely scoring.
The matchup—long known as the “Battle of Perth County”—once again lived up to its reputation for intensity and physicality. But on this night, it was all Cyclones, as Listowel dictated the pace, owned the middle of the ice, and neutralized one of the GOHL’s most dangerous offensive clubs.
A Tight First Period Sets the Tone
Both teams opened with strong defensive play, exchanging chances but refusing to give an inch. The first period ended scoreless, highlighted by sharp goaltending and the Cyclones’ willingness to block shots and win board battles.
The breakthrough would come soon enough.
O’DONNELL OPENS THE SCORING; CYCLONES TAKE CONTROL
At 4:11 of the second period, Jack O’Donnell opened the scoring in spectacular fashion—walking into space and ripping a shot off the top crossbar and in.
Thomas Paleczny earned the assist with a crisp feed into the slot, setting the tone for a Cyclones offensive surge.
Just two minutes later, at 6:28, Bradley Wilhelm buried his first goal of the season, finishing a net-front scramble that brought the crowd to its feet.
The goal was set up by excellent puck movement from Trent Houghton and Max Greer, who worked the cycle with poise and patience.
Listowel wasn’t done yet.
On a late-period power play, the Cyclones struck again. Clark Deboer converted on a rebound opportunity, making it 3–0 with assists from Ethan Fischer and Aiden Renaud. The man-advantage unit moved the puck with confidence, showcasing one of its strongest sequences of the year.
3rd PERIOD: CYCLONES SEAL THE DEAL
The Cyclones wasted no time adding insurance in the final frame.
At just 1:43 into the third, Dylan Szymanowski snapped home a perfectly placed shot, with assists going to Thomas Paleczny and Aiden Renaud, who both enjoyed multi-point nights.
From there, Listowel locked the game down, suffocating St. Marys’ transition game and winning key battles in all three zones.
KOWATSCH PERFECT IN THE CREASE
Between the pipes, Ethan Kowatsch delivered a flawless performance, making 28 saves en route to a well-earned shutout. Calm, composed, and technically sharp, Kowatsch was exceptional in handling second-chance attempts and steering rebounds out of danger.
Tonight’s effort marks one of the Cyclones’ most complete defensive games of the season.
