LISTOWEL, ON – September 14, 2025 — The Listowel Cyclones opened their 2025-26 GOJHL campaign this past weekend with back-to-back matchups against their long-time rivals, the Elmira Sugar Kings, in what was a spirited edition of the Battle of Highway 86.
The Cyclones hosted their home opener Friday night at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena, drawing a strong crowd of over 500 fans. The energy in the building was electric as the community came out in full force to support their team in the highly anticipated season opener.
Between the pipes, Ethan Kowatsch was outstanding for Listowel, turning away 40 shots in a performance that showcased his poise and athleticism. Despite his efforts, the Cyclones were unable to find the back of the net, falling 6-0 to a sharp Sugar Kings squad.
The rivalry continued Sunday as the Cyclones traveled to Elmira for the return leg. This time, the Cyclones found the scoresheet, with forward Lyndon Cabrol notching his first career GOJHL goal. The unassisted power-play marker came in the third period and provided a spark for the visiting bench. Kowatsch once again stood tall in goal, stopping 34 shots in the 4-1 road loss.
While the results weren’t what the Cyclones were aiming for, the weekend offered positives to build upon, including strong goaltending and a memorable milestone for Cabrol.
The Listowel Cyclones are back on home ice Thursday, September 19th, with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena as they host the Sarnia Legionnaires. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they look to bounce back and get into the win column. For those unable to attend in person, the game will be streamed live on FloHockey.
